La canzone è stata scritta al Regis Hotel di New York durante un tour della band negli Stati Uniti. Era intesa come un’antitesi agli inni flower power dell’epoca come “Let’s Go to San Francisco” e “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” in quanto il protagonista era stato a San Francisco per unirsi agli hippy ma ora aveva nostalgia di casa. L’idea che le luci si fossero spente in Massachusetts era di suggerire che tutti fossero andati a San Francisco.
Nel 2019 Massachusetts è stata utilizzata nella colonna sonora di City on a Hill, serie televisiva con Kevin Bacon, Aldis Hodge e Amanda Clayton in onda in Italia su Sky e Now tv a partire dal 3 settembre 2019.
